The Boston Red Sox got a tough win over the Detroit Tigers yesterday at Fenway Park with the Red Sox victorious 4 to 3. It was a huge win that rooters with Red Sox tickets aren’t likely to forget.
Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon (3.05 ERA) got the win, while Brad Thomas (4.30 ERA) took the loss for the Tigers. Clay Buchholz went 8.0 solid innings for the Red Sox, allowed 3 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. The Tigers’s starter Justin Verlander went 7.0 innings, allowed 6 hits, no home runs and 3 earned runs with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Robbie Weinhardt (3.86) also pitched for the Tigers. With the win, Papelbon’s record goes to 4-4, while Thomas drops to 4-1.
In addition to the 4 runs, the Red Sox put up 9 hits and committed no errors. It wasn’t a huge day for anyone at the plate for the Red Sox, as nobody managed more than 2 hits. Victor Martinez had a tough day at the plate, leaving 5 runners on base. The Tigers didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. The Tigers mustered 3 runs, 5 hits and one error.
Umpiring duties were performed by Dale Scott, Jerry Meals, Mark Wegner and Dan Iassogna. There were 37,479 Red Sox ticket holders in attendance at Fenway Park.
